Here on the island you have two choices of Internet provider, Verizon (no FIOS yet) and Comcast. The Verizon is provided over DSL using a POTS (plain old telephone service) copper wires coming in. The DSL service is generally slow. Since many of our guests are working hard normally I don’t want them to be frustrated by a slow internet keeping them from enjoying their vacations. To that end I selected Comcast/XFinity for our cable and internet. We still use Verizon for the phone at the house for alarm connections but that is hopefully going to go away sometime.
I recently Swapped out the exiting modem with telephony for greater speeds and now have an Arris Model TG1682G
This is odd because it is not the best or fastest unit. The specs are
- Device Type Gateway
- Download Speed Up to 290 Mbps
- Voice/Telephone enabled Yes
- WiFi enabled Yes
- DOCSIS Channels 24 down × 8 up
- DOCSIS Version DOCSIS 3.0
- IPv6 Yes
Their own WiFi recommendation is for this unit
ARRIS SURFBOARD Cable Modem
- Download Speed Up to 642 Mbps
- Voice/Telephone enabled Yes
- WiFi enabled Yes
- DOCSIS Channels 24 down × 8 up
- DOCSIS Version DOCSIS 3.0
- IPv6 Yes
I will try to upgrade this but it may not be worth it.
$10 per month is what I pay for this and I figure the rental is worth it so that I don’t have to worry if the modem goes down during the summer.
Ideal setup will be the latest ARRIS model with a new Linksys Router
I will continue to use the 2013 Asus rt-ac66u as an access point for the front of the house
