This is a list of reminders for caretaking the Captain Morse House. Changes to this list can be made online in the website. Please save this as a shortcut on your phone.

Important Notes

  • FLOORS ARE FRAGILE - Place protection and be careful especially on the stairs. Be careful when moving, bags, chairs or tables on the newly re-finished floors. If protective scuff pads are missing there are plenty of extras in the hall closet.
  • MOST WINDOWS DO NOT STAY UP ON THEIR OWN AND REQUIRE STICKS Place a stick on the right side of the window in the window channel. If windows slam they can cause injury and damage. Close windows ahead of rain.
  • THE ATTIC STAIRS ARE STEEP – BE CAREFUL – not suitable for small children.
  • USE SHOE PROTECTION OR TAKE OFF SHOES  - please take care to remove it.
  • In early spring or late fall the hot water heater may be on pilot. If the hot water is cold go the water heater and turn the red knob above the tank temperature from PILOT to ON (do not turn to off!)

Please email us if you have any comments to improve the house or this manual.

Separate the Wings

To open or close the wings follow this procedure exactly

You will need to go from the 1st floor to the 3rd floor twice to do the entire procedure.

3rd Floor East Side

Start on the third floor East wing side. Throw the barrel bolt on the door that’s closest to the bathroom and at the top of the East wing stairs. Then go downstairs to the second floor.

2nd Floor

Retrieve the poles and curtains from the closet on the Morse Street side of the fireplace in Bedroom Four (middle bedroom). Place the West Wing curtain and curtain rod on the west side of the door and set up the east side curtain rod (the one with one knob on it) on the east side of the door. Tan side out and neatly draped.
Go to the first floor and simply walk into the West Wing and back up the West Wing stairs to the third floor.

3rd Floor

Throw the barrel bolt on the west side of the door that’s closest to the bathroom, then go downstairs to the second floor.

2nd Floor

Throw the barrel bolt on the door and then set up the curtain and rod on the West side of the door. Note that there is a hook on the right side to support the rod. You will need to turn the rod to expand it. Drape the curtain neatly with the tan side out.
Go downstairs to the 1st floor.

1st Floor

Enter the passageway between the East and West Wing kitchens. Throw the barrel bolt on the swinging door.
Untie the plywood panel and move it into position against the swinging door. Note how it is tied so you can do that again in the future when you open up the wings again.
Note the slot at the bottom of the door that’s cut out to go around the hinge plate once the panel is fully in position. Turn the thumbscrews on the left and right side of the panel to secure it in place. There should be six thumb screws.

Opening Up the House and combining the wings

To open up the house and combine the wings, reverse the procedure.
On the 2nd floor, make sure you neatly fold up the curtains and place them back into bedroom number four’s closet. Try to fold the curtains so that the labels (East Wing or West Wing) are clearly visible on the outside of the folded curtain.
