Maps of Martha’s Vineyard

1694 Map of Martha’s Vineyard
People have been mapping the island since it was discovered by the English Explorer Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602. Of course Indians had been here for centuries before hand and at the time of it’s discovery numbered about 3,000. Above is a map drawn by Simon Athearn seeking to divide the island “his way”. He was objecting to the virtual kingdom that was established by Thomas Mayhew during the time that Martha’s Vineyard was part of New York. See our page on Martha’s Vineyard for more information.
