After each use, brush the grates with a wire brush to remove food particles. Wipe down surfaces with a damp cloth to prevent grease buildup.

Deep Clean

Monthly, disassemble the grill and soak grates in soapy water. Scrub with a non-abrasive pad and rinse thoroughly before reassembling.

Pro Tips for Grill Maintenance

Essential BBQ Grill Care

To ensure your BBQ grill remains in peak condition, start by cleaning the grates with a stiff wire brush after each use. Regularly check for grease build-up in the drip pan and remove it to prevent flare-ups. For a deeper clean, soak the grates in a mixture of vinegar and baking soda overnight to loosen stubborn residue. Remember to inspect the burners for blockages and clean them with a soft brush. Finally, cover your grill when not in use to protect it from the elements and extend its lifespan.

BBQ Grill Cleaning FAQ

Get answers to your most pressing BBQ grill maintenance questions.

How often should I clean my BBQ grill?

Clean your grill after each use to prevent food residue from building up. Brush it down while it's still hot and then close the lid to harden the residue. Give it another brush after bringing the grill up to temp to start a new meal. Do not brush the grill when cold.

A deep clean should be done every 20 uses and at the end of the season. Rental grills should be done once a week.

What tools do I need for grill cleaning?

You'll need a wire brush, we like this model from Weber.

For Deep Cleaning
A 4" Putty Knife works well for the flat surfaces by Tarvol
A Cave Tools Bristle-Free Metal Grill & Griddle Scraper
Scotch-Brite Steel Scrubber Pad
You can also use regular steel wool
Easy Off Heavy Duty Degreaser Spray Bottle
You can buy refills for this as well.
Finally...
A large sheet of cardboard to spray down the parts
Heavy-duty disposable gloves
A bucket large enough for everything to soak after cleaning

How do I not make a big mess?

I use a large sheet of cardboard from a shipping box to spray down the parts and work on.
I do not use a vacuum cleaner as the grease will wreck the filter. If I do use one it is at the very end after using a broom.
I buy and use heavy-duty disposable gloves

Can I use oven cleaner on my grill?

I use Oven Cleaner but my grill is 100% stainless steel. Test your grill parts to make sure its not too harsh for the finish. Some use Dawn or Cleaning Vinegar (extra acidic).
Some people use Sprite or Gingerale in a spray bottle 50/50 with hot water.

How do I prevent rust on my grill?

To prevent rust, ensure your grill is dry before covering it. Use a grill cover to protect it from moisture and consider applying a thin layer of vegetable oil to the grates after cleaning.
WD-40 is an excellent cleaner and protector. Spray on and then buff with a paper towel
In a marine environment consider an all Stainless Grill by Bull or similar

What should I do if my grill won't light?

Check the gas supply and ensure the burners are clean and free of obstructions. If the problem persists, inspect the igniter and replace it if necessary. Always turn on the tank first and then the knob. Turn off the knob and then the tank when done. Otherwise you can get a vapor lock. If you get a lock take the tank off the hose. Make sure everything is off and then reattach the tank.

How can I clean the grill's exterior?

Use a mild detergent and a soft cloth to wipe down the exterior. For stainless steel grills, a stainless steel cleaner can help maintain the shine.
Again WD-40 is an excellent cleaner and protector. Spray on and then buff with a paper towel
